　　In this age of information and media, we are bombarded with all kinds of news every day even though they just might not have the news value as we would have preferred. But, the news here, I’m about to share, is certainly interesting as far as its news value is concerned.

　　In a fine morning a few weeks ago, I turned on the TV, like any other usual day, this news was aired on one of our local TV channels and it really caught my eyes.

　　The news was related to the tough life of an old man, in his early 70’s, who earns his living by selling plastic bottles in Shanghai. The news also mentioned that he remains unmarried all his life and he has no children to look after him. Ironically enough though, he never seeks any help from anybody to survive. Of course, a lot of people had tried to help him, but he refused to accept their help, apparently because he thought it was a disgrace to accept other peoples’ help and that he was very happy living like that for over the last 30 years. What moved me most was that it is he who has helped many helpless and poor people with the very insignificant amount of money that he earns by selling plastic bottles.

　　As for why people were interested in this piece of news. Well, first of all, his steel-strong determination and the spirit of never giving up deeply inspired us, and I have realized that those people who we perceive as worthless because of their purposeless life seem to have a greater sense of self-respect. On top of that, the news also taught people that it doesn’t really take much money to heal and help others, but it is the heart of a person, which is needed the most.
