考题回忆Traditions are defined as customary or established ways of doing things in a family, community, or culture. Some people believe that it is important to follow traditions even when those traditions conflict with or are quite different from their own individual preferences. Other people believe that individual preferences are more important than traditions. Which view do you agree with, and why?
From a small family to an influential culture, traditions have always played a crucial role in them. It is hard to imagine a person who has never been taught to follow the traditions. Some people believe that considering the importance of traditions, it is necessary for us to put a priority on them, whereas in the eyes of others, it is the time to put more emphasis on individual preferences instead of traditions. As far as I am concerned, both traditions and individual preferences are indispensable in our life, and it is inappropriate to say which one outweighs the other.
Traditions and customs serve as living memories of our cultural heritage. Their existence not only helps shape different cultures, but also enable people to demonstrate our respect to our predecessors. It is universally acknowledged that each culture has its unique traditions which have been passed on from one generation to the other. For instance, Chinese people have dumplings on the Chinese new year eve, which symbolizes people’s wish for a good fortune next year. People in North America would eat turkeys and pumpkin pies on Thanksgiving day to express their gratitude to God and celebrate the family reunion. Turkish people would send each candies as gifts on Eid as a Muslim tradition. It is these customs that mark the characteristics of different cultures. In addition, by following traditions, people pay tribute to their predecessors, inheriting some valuable qualities from them. In China, people celebrate the Dragon Boat festival in memory of an ancient poet and politician called Qu Yuan because of his patriotism. By celebrating the festival, people are reminded of what he did for his country and are influenced by his behavior.
Nevertheless, times have changed, and that is why sometimes we have to prioritize personal preferences, not traditions. By giving a priority to individual preferences, people eliminate conflicts between generations, and experience something brand new which adds color to their life. It is widely recognized that any custom formed due to the need of its time, and what made people comfortable in the past might fail to appeal to modern people. Therefore, it will be unwise if older people insist on traditions in a family or community sometimes. In the Chinese tradition, kowtow is an act showing people’s respect to senior citizens or someone higher in the hierarchy. However, we can hardly see an old man in the city would ask his descendants to kowtow to him, for this is a reminder of feudalism and is out of date. Besides, trying something new is an unforgettable experience for people. For example, in China, many people living in metropolises are deprived of the opportunity to travel by the overwhelming workload. Therefore, when the holiday comes, they abandon the tradition of gathering with their families, and travel abroad instead. It turns out the exposure to exotic elements would enable them to return to work with a better mental condition. In this case, it is personal likes that make a difference, not the tradition.
There is no doubt that traditions play a decisive role in our history, but it is too rigid to say that people have to follow traditions all the time. A balance needs to be stricken between traditions and individual preferences, which is a more ideal choice for contemporary people.
