The reading passage and the lecture both talk about what happened to people on the Mary Celeste. The reading passage mentions three theories, while the lecture maintains that none of them is convincing.

To begin with, according to the passage, the sailors on the Mary Celeste might be attacked and captured by pirates. However, the lecture indicates that no one ever came forward to demand money for the captain and the sailors of Mary Celeste, and almost nothing from the Mary Celeste was missing. Both of these show that the ship was not attacked by pirates.

Secondly, to quote the passage, the flammable liquid stored in the barrels might have leaked during the voyage, and for fear of explosion, the captain and the crew escaped to the lifeboat and encountered an accident. Unlike described in the passage, the lecturer argues that sailors who discovered the Mary Celeste did not make any records of the strong smell which could be caused by the leakage of the flammable liquid, which means that there is very little evidence that the barrels had actually leaked the liquid.

Finally, as the author argues, the captain and the crew were likely to use the lifeboat to reach the nearby island of Santa Maria, for they might have determined that the ship was in danger of sinking. Quite the contrary, the lecturer maintains that as experienced sailors, the captain and the crew members would have recognized that the ship was still able to travel for at least a few days, and they would use the ship instead of the lifeboat if they wanted to travel to a nearby island, because traveling on the ship was far safer.
