In terms of the new important skill I learned, I’d like to talk about speaking German, which was proven beneficial to both my daily life and my career, as well as my path to become a polyglot.

Well… My interest of this language can be traced back to the first German film I watched, Goodbye Lenin. After watching it, I was deeply fascinated by the masculine features of the language itself. Apart from that, the German history and culture were also something that I’ve been interested in for a long time.

However, it was not until I started learning it did I realize that its grammatic system is so perplexing that it usually takes me half a minute to produce an error-free sentence. Nevertheless, I struggled with the help of a couple of grammar books, some online courses and my own tireless practice. So far, I’ve managed to achieve conversational fluency, which gave me a great sense of achievement, to say the least.

As for why it’s an important skill and how it helped, as I’ve mentioned before, my job requires me to socialize with a lot of potential foreign customers, especially Germans. Although most of them are fluent enough in English, having conversations with them in their native tongue considerably narrowed our cultural gaps. I even made a group of German friends thanks to this skill. To exaggerate things a bit, this skill helps me to drag my dream life in Germany a bit closer to reality. Therefore, I consider this skill very practical.
