　　’Spending a year working or traveling can provide psychological and physical benefits for students, as it deviates from the conventional norm. Nonetheless, this phenomenon has the potential to inflict harmful financial and social repercussions.

　　Taking a gap year can broaden one’s worldview by traveling to novel and exciting places, communicating with various individuals and experiencing the real world. Furthermore, it can give students much-needed relaxation, after studying for more than a decade in their primary, middle and secondary school educational lives. In this way, pupils have more energy and a willingness to enter university studies, making their college experience more enriching and educational. Moreover, through traveling or working, youngsters have the opportunity to learn more about themselves and understand what exactly they would prefer to pursue in the future.

　　Working for a year-long period with merely a high school diploma doesn’t offer the best potential opportunities for students. Although they are able to gain some on-the-job experience, their salaries would be much lower than if they continuously remain in school and seek work after obtaining an undergraduate or graduate degree. In terms of their ages, these students are one year older than most of their counterparts, making it more difficult to compete with their fellow classmates after graduating. Additionally, taking a gap year to travel could cost a large sum and place a financial burden on the family, not to mention be stressful and waste a lot of time.

　　Despite the positive and negative aspects of taking a gap year, students need to decide if it could provide a situation where the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
