　　In this day and age, the food industry is vast and operates through an extensive infrastructure network that exists between cities, provinces and even nations. The reasons for the existence of such a large system as well as its pros and cons will be discussed.

      Certain crops only grow in tropical areas and in order to transport these fruits and vegetables to　people living in other areas, they need to be moved from one region to another. Furthermore,international trade has allowed individuals from various countries to sample foods from faraway places by simply visiting local supermarkets. Moreover, online shopping and the proliferation of shipping firms have enabled customers to choose the types of meals they are interested in and have them delivered to their doorsteps.

　  One of the advantages of food being able to travel thousands of kilometres is that it allows localfarmers to reach larger markets. To add to that, people from all corners of the globe have the opportunity to taste exotic foods they have never tried before. A disadvantage is that the shelf life of food may be shortened if it spends a long time in arriving at its destination. Additionally, it creates greater competition for local producers as the import of food from other regions wouldalso be available for purchase.

　  Overall, food is travelling lengthier distances than ever due to increased demand andimprovements in shipping technologies. This allows farmers to reach a wider market and givesconsumers greater chances to enjoy various cuisines. Yet, perishable foods don’t last very long and greater competition in the food industry has arisen.
