It is true that historically, music has played an important role in delivering feelings, emotions or information like language, and I believe that in the future, this art form may still the long-term communication tool universally.

　　Music functions as a linguistic tool because of its internal mechanism that stirs our physical and spiritual responses as languages do. People may easily capture the emotions that is conveyed by, say, a movement of the string quartet thanks to some parts in our brains (mostly the caudate) that are triggered by the notes and music sentences; these parts are mainly linked with our activities of finding meanings, recalling past experiences and forming images to concretize abstract information like languages, sounds or visual elements. That means one would identify what the music wants us to feel just like we do in receiving linguistic signals. Another more interesting point is that, for some reasons that are still uncovered by scientific researchers, people (and some other species) can instinctively interpret the emotions delivered by music pieces; a case in point is that when we hear a series of major chords, most of us would sense the happy moods or solemn atmosphere, but when there are consecutive minor ones, we perceive sorrow or sadness. All these mental identifications source mainly from our instinct without the need to be nurtured. This also makes the music “wordless language” to many people around the world.

As a result, we humans have already made progress in using music to communicate, as a cultural signal, or to comfort mentally or physically wounded people, and this trend would be much more profound in this technological world. Knowing that most people are born with the ability to appreciate music, writers in the past composed poems that are easily sung in a fixed rhythm and melody, making their works widespread among folks. If we date back to the Baroque era, we may even see how musicians had composed masterpieces to eulogize the god; the former believed that music is the only language that makes them talk with the latter. What is more, music has become more inspiring than languages after numerous instruments have been invented; movements are therefore displayed more encouragingly, so as to better trigger our production of dopamine and other stimuli that are linked to our feelings of excitement or inner peace. After a long term of geographical development, music now grows in multiple genres, each with specific cultural meaning, and is somehow much more understandable than the plain languages. All these properties make music thrive as a more communicative way than languages do, and is with the potential to be used in multi-dimensional ways like movies, television, and some visual communications.
