  ESSAY 1

Satellite television and 24-hour news channels mean that viewersare inundated with images of natural disasters, wars and conflictfrom around the world. While it's important to know what is go-ing on in our world, it can be depressing orcounter-productive towatch repeated imagesof famine, fighting or fear. In this essay, Iwill ask if these scenes have a negative effect on us.

Most people agree with the need for news organizations to provi-de us with up-to-date and accurate information, and live picturesconvey information in a way that words cannot. For onething, livefootage or pictures allow us to understand the situation very rapi-dly. People can graspwhat is happening much more quickly thanby reading long articles. A second point is thatpictures allow usto form our own idea of the situation, without input from the rep-orter or journalist. A picture of astarving refugee baby or of riotpolice and tear gas does not seem to need explanation. Finally, graphic pictures force us tosee the situation as it affects normal-people, not the politiciansat their meetings or in their expensivecars.

However, the constant barrage of images can be counterproduct-ive.Instead of learning more about the starving baby and whatled to the situation, we push the image from our mind. To protectourselves, we group the images: another typhoon in the Philippi-nes, another earthquakein China, another bomb in Gaza.As moreand more images appear we feel more and more powerless andunable to contribute to solving the problem. Asecond point is thatnewsorganizations compete to make their images more graphic:greater carnage, more cryingmothers, angrier protestors. We alsohave to question the reliability of some of the images: are theystaged? Many televisionstations and journalists have their ownbias and agenda. The result of this is that watching the news bec-omes harder and we respond less and less to the situation and tothe human suffering.

In conclusion, we need to stay informed, but we also need to limitour exposure to theconstant tide of news and shocking images.Too much can wear us down or make uscallous, and we need toget past the simplistic images and understand the story behind it.
