  The tables compare the sales of fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.

  Compared with 1999, the 2004 figures in the UK saw the most significant rise in the sales of coffee from 1.5 to 20 million Euros. By contrast, the increasing sales figures for other four nations were far less notable.

  Specifically, whlle the coffee sales in Switzerland doubled from 3 to 6 million Euros, the figures for Sweden and Denmark saw an increase from 0.8 to 1 and 1.8 to 2 million Euros, which compared with the other three countnes were the lowest growth rate.

  Looking at the sales of bananas in detail, the sales figures for Switzerland were the highest by far, with their numbers nsing from 15 million Euros in 1999 to 47 million Euros in 2004. Whereas the UK and Belgum saw much slighter increase from 1 to 5.5 and 0.6 to 4 million Euros respectively. In sharp contrast, the sales of bananas in Sweden and Denmark saw a huge decrease by 50% in 2004 compared with their figures in 1999.

  Overall, the total sales figures for coffee saw an increasing trend in all e European countnes dunng the five years period. Three out of the five countries also saw an increase in banana sales, however, sales for Sweden and Denmark fell over this period.
